Job Description

We are seeking an experienced Travel Safety Officer to support day-to-day construction activities and help maintain a safe, compliant, and productive job site. This position will work directly with project management, field supervision, subcontractors, and craft personnel to identify hazards, address unsafe conditions, and ensure company and project safety requirements are consistently followed.

The ideal candidate is comfortable working in an active construction environment, has a strong working knowledge of OSHA requirements, and can communicate effectively with both field personnel and management.

Expectations:
The Travel Safety Officer is expected to be proactive, visible, and engaged in field operations. This is not a desk-based safety position. The successful candidate will spend the majority of their time in the field interacting with crews, identifying potential issues before they result in an incident, and working with project leadership to develop practical solutions.

The position requires someone who can build relationships with field personnel while still maintaining accountability and enforcing project safety requirements. The Travel Safety Officer must be comfortable stopping work when necessary and communicating concerns professionally with employees, subcontractors, supervisors, and project management.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Maintain a consistent safety presence in the field and actively engage with project personnel throughout the workday.
  • Conduct daily jobsite inspections to identify unsafe conditions, behaviors, and potential high-risk exposures.
  • Work directly with project supervision and subcontractors to correct identified hazards in a timely manner.
  • Review daily PTPs/JHAs and verify that crews understand the hazards and controls associated with their work.
  • Verify subcontractor compliance with company safety policies, project requirements, and applicable OSHA regulations.
  • Monitor high-risk activities including fall exposures, excavation, steel erection, crane and rigging operations, hot work, electrical activities, material handling, and mobile equipment operations.
  • Conduct site safety orientations, toolbox talks, safety meetings, and safety stand-downs as needed.
  • Exercise Stop Work Authority when an imminent danger or serious safety hazard is identified.
  • Investigate incidents, injuries, near misses, and property damage events and assist with identifying root causes and corrective actions.
  • Prepare clear and accurate safety inspection reports, incident reports, and corrective action documentation.
  • Track identified safety deficiencies through completion and verify corrective actions in the field.
  • Assist project management with maintaining required safety documentation and records.
  • Participate in project planning meetings and communicate upcoming safety concerns or high-risk activities.
  • Reinforce positive safety practices through coaching and field engagement while holding personnel accountable when requirements are not followed.
  • Assist with emergency response planning and implementation of site-specific emergency procedures.

What You Bring:

  • Minimum 5 years of construction safety experience, preferably on commercial or large-scale construction projects.
  • Strong working knowledge of Title 8, California Code of Regulations and applicable state safety regulations.
  • Experience conducting jobsite safety inspections, audits, and hazard assessments.
  • Knowledge of fall protection, excavation/trenching, scaffolding, electrical safety, cranes and rigging, aerial lifts/MEWPs, hot work, and other common construction activities.
  • Experience reviewing Pre-Task Plans (PTPs), Job Hazard Analyses (JHAs), and Activity Hazard Analyses (AHAs).
  • Ability to recognize unsafe conditions and take immediate action when necessary.
  • Strong communication, documentation, and interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to work effectively with project management, superintendents, subcontractors, and field personnel.
  • Current First Aid/CPR/AED certification preferred.
  • Bilingual English/Spanish is a plus.
  • Candidates must possess at least one of the following:
    • Current OSHA 500 – Trainer Course in OSHA Standards for Construction, or
    • Current BCSP Construction Health and Safety Technician (CHST) certification or higher-level BCSP credential.

Position:

  • Reports to Safety Director

Physical Requirements:

  • Ability to work outdoors and in active construction environments.
  • Ability to walk jobsites for extended periods and navigate uneven terrain.
  • Ability to climb stairs and ladders and access elevated work areas when necessary.
  • Ability to wear all required personal protective equipment.
  • Ability to work in varying weather conditions and temperatures.
  • Must be able to maintain a flexible schedule based on project operations and construction activities.

Preferred Candidate:

We are looking for someone who understands that effective construction safety is more than enforcing rules. The right candidate will be able to recognize hazards, communicate expectations clearly, coach employees and subcontractors, and work alongside the project team to keep work moving safely.

The individual should be confident making field decisions, comfortable addressing unsafe conditions immediately, and capable of earning the respect of both project leadership and field personnel.

Why Join Us?

  • Work in a growing and supportive environment.
  • Play a key role in maintaining and improving safety performance.
  • Be part of a collaborative and knowledgeable team.
If you're ready to take the next step in your career, we’d love to hear from you!
