Duties and Responsibilities

(*denotes essential function)

1. *Under the general supervision of the Student Development Coordinator of the Kipuka Native Hawaiian Student Center, provides direct academic, career, and financial aid advising for Native Hawaiian returning and transfer students in consultation with relevant units in the UH Hilo Division of Student Affairs.

2. *Coordinate, conduct, and evaluate student success and development courses, workshops, and activities.

3. *Hires, trains, supervises and evaluates peer mentors to implement programs and activities.

4. *Outreach to and collaborate with academic and support programs at University of Hawaii Community Colleges in support of transfer students.

5. Review student records and progress towards a degree for students intending to transfer to UH Hilo.

6. Connect and liaise between the student and academic departments/colleges to create a plan for degree completion.

7. Work with the UH Hilo Admissions Office to assist students with the application process.

8. Liaise with the UH Hilo Financial Aid and Cashiers office to assist students needing financial support and advice.

9. Maintain written and electronic records of services provided to returning and transfer students.

10. Makes referrals to campus agencies for additional support services.

11. Attends conferences, workshops, and represents the program in public forums, meetings, and conferences, etc.

12. Works in multiple work settings and maintains a variable work schedule including nights, weekends, and or holiday hours, as directed or required.

13. Other duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications

1. Possession of a baccalaureate degree in any field from an accredited university and 3 year(s) of progressively responsible professional experience with responsibilities for student support services in a university or college; or any equivalent combination of education and/or professional work experience which provides the required education, knowledge, skills and abilities as indicated.

2. Considerable working knowledge of principles, practices and techniques in the area of Hawaiian educational programs, activities, and resources as demonstrated by the broad knowledge of the full range of pertinent standard and evolving concepts, principles and methodologies.

3. Considerable working knowledge and understanding of applicable federal and state laws, rules, regulations and theories and systems associated with Hawaiian educational programs, activities, and resources.

4. Demonstrated ability to resolve wide ranging complex problems through the use of creative reasoning and logic to accurately determine the cause of the problems and the resolution of the problems in an effective, innovative and timely manner.

5. Demonstrated ability to interpret and present information and ideas clearly and accurately in writing, verbally and by preparation of reports and other materials.

6. Demonstrated ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with internal and external organizations, groups, team leaders and members, and individuals.

7. Demonstrated ability to operate a personal computer, apply word processing software.

8. For supervisory work, demonstrated ability to lead subordinates, manage work priorities and projects, and manage employee relations.

9. Ability to work days, evenings, weekends, and holidays as directed.

Desirable Qualifications

1. Possession of a Master's degree in any field from an accredited university.

2. At least 5 years successful experience working with student support services.

3. Knowledge of UH Hilo programs and resources.

4. Knowledge of University of Hawaii processes for transfer students.

5. Prior experience with STAR and Academic Logic.

6. Ability to work and communicate with university administrators, faculty, and staff in support of Native Hawaiian transfer student success.
