Position Description:

University of Iowa Stead Family Department of Pediatrics seeks a pediatric cardiologist for our Des Moines, Iowa location. Appointment will be an open rank clinical track position.   The individual selected will join the Division of Cardiology to provide patient care, teaching, and consultative services as a pediatric cardiologist.  

This is a rare opportunity to establish and grow a community-based practice in Des Moines, Iowa. The position combines the autonomy and community impact of a local pediatric cardiologist with the complete support of an academic pediatric cardiology program.

You will be employed by the University of Iowa and based in Des Moines, building a practice on a strong referral foundation while remaining fully integrated with the Division's imaging, interventional, electrophysiology, heart failure, and congenital cardiac surgery teams in Iowa City. The division provides the only pediatric electrophysiology, diagnostic and interventional cath, transplant and surgical services for in the state of Iowa.

This role is ideal for a physician who values continuity of care, enjoys building relationships with referring pediatricians, OB providers, and families, and wants to shape a practice rather than inherit one with an established academic division supporting them

What You'll Do

- Provide comprehensive outpatient pediatric cardiology care to fetuses, infants, children, adolescents, and young adults in the Des Moines community

- Interpret transthoracic echocardiograms,, electrocardiograms (EKGs, and exercise (stress) testing

- Interpret fetal echocardiograms

- Interpret ambulatory rhythm monitors and other non-invasive diagnostics

- Serve as the trusted local pediatric cardiology resource for community pediatricians, family medicine physicians, and OB providers

- Coordinate seamless referral of patients requiring catheterization, electrophysiology procedures, advanced imaging, or congenital heart surgery to the Division's academic center in Iowa City

- Partner with Division leadership to grow the Des Moines practice through service expansion, outreach relationships, and program development over time

- Participate in the Division's collaborative case conferences and multidisciplinary care, supported by shared imaging review and telemedicine

The ACGME-accredited pediatric residency program at Stead Family Children’s Hospital trains 50 pediatric resident physicians.  

For its 2025-26 edition of “Best Children’s Hospitals,” U.S. News & World Report ranked Stead Family Children's Hospital in six pediatric specialties:  Neonatology, Pediatric and Adolescent Behavioral Health, Pediatric Cancer, Pediatric Diabetes and Endocrinology, Pediatric Nephrology, and Pediatric Urology.

Education Requirement:

Must hold an MD/DO degree, or equivalent 

Required Qualifications:

Board certified or eligible in Pediatrics, or equivalent  

Board certified or eligible pediatric cardiology 

Candidates must be licensed or eligible for medical licensure in the State of Iowa 

Desirable Qualifications:

Interest in cardiology  

Experience in patient-oriented research 

Teaching competence in pediatrics for medical students, residents and fellows

Evidence of scholarly activity 

Strong oral and written communication and interpersonal skills
