Job Description

Note: We have been made aware that there are individuals reaching out to artists claiming to be from Gravity Well. If you receive any information about a job listing that is not from a gravitywell.games domain, it did not come from Gravity Well. Please be wary of contact coming from anything other than a gravitywell.games domain.

Additionally, we are not working with any external recruiters or agencies at this time. Our website has an up to date roster of all current employees. If anyone reaches out to you and they are not listed on our website, they are not part of our team.

Gravity Well is looking for a talented Concept Artist (Intermediate to Principal) specializing in stylized concept design for environments, characters, vehicles and anything else the game needs. At Gravity Well, we look for artists who bring a rich sense of storytelling to everything they create.

Working closely with our Art Director, designers, and fellow artists, concept artists produce high-quality visual designs that are both functional and visually appealing, while staying true to the game’s artistic style. If your thing is stylized artwork and you find yourself inspired by animation and European comic books, you just might be a great fit!

What You'll Do:

  • Create, explore, and develop concept art for environments, props, vehicles and characters.
  • Collaborate closely with our Art Director and designers as you help bring the game to life.
  • Collaborate with the 3D artists working from your designs, helping them achieve the vision laid out in the concept art.
  • Ensure that all concept related images are organized, current, and available to the team.
  • Help playtest the game, giving feedback as we develop projects together.
  • Consider gameplay needs and the player’s perspective as you design the look of the game world.

You Must Have:

  • A portfolio of work demonstrating your skill.

Ideally You'll Have:

  • A strong design sense and good artistic taste.
  • 3+ years of experience as a concept artist in games or film.
  • Knowledge and command of fundamental art techniques including anatomy, perspective, color, value, form, and shape language.
  • High level skills at creating fictional worlds with the ability to design all the parts of those worlds: environments, characters, props, vehicles, etc. We try not to hire limited artists.
  • Experience collaborating and guiding 3D artists as they build your designs.
  • Strong interpersonal skills as you work closely with many across the team.

Bonus Points:

  • Experience shipping a AAA game.
  • Ability to communicate and collaborate effectively with team members located globally.
  • Modeling experience with a 3D package for rough blockouts of environment or vehicle designs.

What You’ll Get:

The base pay for this role is:

  • Concept Artist: $100,000 to $135,000 USD per year;
  • Senior Concept Artist: $125,000 to $185,000 per year;
  • Principal Concept Artist: $175,000 to $200,000 per year;

(or equivalent in your local currency). We pay fairly across our global team regardless of your location but it will differ based on factors such as experience, qualifications etc.

In addition to the base pay, we also offer the following:

  • Profit sharing and company equity to all employees, regardless of location
  • Industry leading medical, dental, and vision plans
  • Employer sponsored basic life insurance & AD&D
  • 401k retirement program
  • Flexible work hours
  • Unlimited PTO and sick time
  • Paid parental leave

Some benefits listed, such as the 401k plan for employees in the United States, may vary depending on your employee status and location.

Where You'll Work:

This position is for US and Canadian residents. We have an office in California if you like to come to an office, but most employees work from home across different US time zones and that's totally fine.

Misc:

As part of the interview process, we may ask you to take a paid test.
