Palmetto Shared Services Alliance (PSSA), in partnership with SC DSS, is launching the Pilot of
Palmetto Childcare Connect (PCC) , an innovative substitute workforce program designed to support licensed childcare centers in Anderson and Marlboro Counties, in South Carolina.
As a
Childcare Substitute Professional , you will serve as a trusted “Palmetto Pop-In,” stepping into classrooms when programs need support most. Whether covering a planned absence or responding to a last-minute staffing gap, your presence ensures that classrooms remain safe, supported, and fully operational for the children and families who depend on them.
This role offers the flexibility to choose when and where you work, while making a meaningful impact in early childhood education. Substitutes will work with a variety of programs, age groups, and classroom environments, gaining valuable experience while supporting the stability of the childcare workforce across their community.
Through PCC, you are not just filling a position, you are helping centers stay open, supporting working families, and contributing to a stronger early childhood system in South Carolina. You must be based near/in, or willing to travel to Anderson County.
Duties Role Overview & Flexibility This is a flexible, on-demand position designed to fit your schedule. Childcare centers post available shifts based on their needs, and you can choose which shifts to accept. There is no set schedule; work is based on demand and your availability. Shifts are typically 4-hour or 8-hour blocks, with no lesson planning or long-term responsibilities required. This role allows you to step in, make an immediate impact, and support your community while maintaining full control over when you work.
Key Responsibilities - Provide short-term classroom coverage in licensed childcare centers
- Support daily routines and actively supervise children
- Follow direction from center staff and leadership
- Maintain a safe, clean, and professional environment
Training and Support PSSA ensures you are prepared before entering a classroom:
- Fingerprinting and required background checks
- 20 hours of training aligned with SC DSS requirements
- Program orientation and classroom support guidance
- Ongoing support as you begin working

Requirements - High School Diploma or GED
- Reliable, punctual, and professional
- Comfortable working with young children
- Able to adapt to different environments
- Willing to follow direction and support existing staff
A 30-day supervised period is required for individuals without prior classroom experience.
This pilot program is currently serving Anderson and Marlboro Counties, with plans for future statewide expansion.
